67-443 :: Sprint 2: User experience

In this phase, we are focused on modeling the user experience for a mobile application and making sure that all user interactions are covered. You will be required to create a set of low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframes using the software application of your choice (paper wireframes are also accepted here) that cover all the possible interactions a user can have with the app.

In addition, you must test the low-fidelity wireframes out with at least 4 users that would fall in your target user audience (identified in the prior sprint); for reasons discussed in class, these tests must be conducted with the low-fidelity wireframes only. As you go through the functionality with the users, seek to determine which features are "must have" versus "want to have" versus "like to have" from the user's perspective.

After these tests, you must report on your findings, identifying needed changes in the initial wireframes to make for a better user experience overall. The main report should summarize the findings of the four (or more) users as well as provide an analysis of lessons learned. The details of the individual user test responses should be placed in an appendix to the report and not in the report itself.

Finally, the changes identified in the low-fidelity wireframe testing need to be reflected in a set of high-fidelity wireframes that will guide your app development going forward. Bonus points will be awarded if you are able to retest other target users with the revised high-fidelity wireframes and can confirm that the interactions are what the user expects and desires.

Deliverables

This sprint's deliverables include both a set of low- and high-fidelity wireframes and a written report of the user interaction study. The submission of these deliverables is due electronically to Prof. H, your supervising TA, and alumni mentor by 4pm on Thursday, October 3, 2024. It will constitute 4 percent of your final course grade.

During this sprint you will have two required 15-minute check-ins with your supervising TA (on 9/23 and 9/30) and you have one required check-in with your alumni mentor (to be scheduled with him/her for some date between 9/26 and 9/29). As a reminder, failure to complete these check-ins in a timely manner will result in a grade penalty.

In addition, you are required to turn in a one-page report on your mentor meeting(s). You will be provided a template for these reports and must use the template; failure to do so will result in a 25% penalty on this phase.

  • Apple Design Resources - A set of resources you can use to build out wireframes using either Keynote, Sketch, or Photoshop, as well as some other design tidbits that could be useful.

  • Apple Human Interface Guideline - A nice overview of the UI/UX guidelines Apple encourages for iOS apps.
